The Paddle Canada Level-2 Skills program helps paddlers build competency and skills for doing multi-day trips as well as boat handling and playing in more challenging waters. We will work to refine existing skills from the Level-1 program and introduce new skills including linking strokes into maneuvers, paddling in currents and swell and an introduction to rolling. This program will give you greater confidence and comfort with boat handling in more dynamic ocean environments. With the goal of developing towards self-reliant paddlers, participants will cover topics including navigation and seamanship, boat handling and rescues in rough conditions as well as decision making, group behaviour, risk management and weather.
Cloud 9 Adventures will be offering 2 different styles of Paddle Canada Level-2 Skills programs for 2019. We will offer one program focused on performance and technical paddling. This program will take place over four consecutive days and will not include a camping component. The second program will take place over two separate 2-day weekends. This program will cover the same material, but we will take the second weekend to head out as a group on an adventure with some additional focus on expedition and camping skills.
Participants are required to have a Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills or equivalent.
Program #1 – Performance & Technical Skills Focus (no camping)
June 1-4 – Deer Island, NB
This program will take place over four consecutive days. The program will take place in Southwestern New Brunswick using the beautiful Deer Island area as the primary learning environment. The first couple of days will focus on on refining existing skills, learning new skills and covering important topics including navigation, weather, communication and decision making. The focus of the last couple of days will be to build off of the foundational skills and take our new skills to practice in more dynamic waters as well as put theoretical learning into practice with on-water navigation, rescue and safety and decision making.
Program #2 – Split Weekend with Camping Program
Weekend 1 – July 13-14 – Prince Edward Island
Weekend 2 – July 28-29 – Eastern Shore, Nova Scotia
This program will be split over two separate weekends. The first weekend will be spent in Prince Edward Island refining existing skills, learning new skills and paddling in tidal currents followed by a second weekend focused on kayak touring, navigation and touring skills along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. Running the program over two weekends provides the participants an opportunity to work on their skills in preparation for the second weekend. Participants should be ready for a mixture of full days on the water and some evening theory sessions.
